9/11 Attacks Mark 24th Anniversary Today

Bongo Darpan Online: Today marks the 24th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history, the 9/11 attacks. On September 11, 2001, the United States was struck by horrific terrorist assaults. Nearly three thousand people were killed in the attack. Americans are commemorating the day with various events, including paying tribute to the victims, according to news agency AP.On this occasion, memorial services have been organized in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Relatives of the victims, distinguished figures, and politicians are expected to participate.Along with tributes, as in every year, the families of the victims will read out the names of the deceased and observe moments of silence in their memory.On this day in 2001, terrorists hijacked four passenger planes and carried out coordinated attacks on New York’s Twin Towers and the Pentagon in Virginia. Nearly three thousand people were killed in the attacks. Among the dead were citizens from about 78 countries, including Bangladesh. Nearly 25,000 were seriously injured.Claiming responsibility for the attack, al-Qaeda triggered a U.S.-led global “war on terror.” Under the banner of fighting extremism, the U.S. launched military invasions in Afghanistan and several Middle Eastern countries, causing the deaths of many innocent civilians. Later, in 2011, U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden in a raid in Pakistan.After the destruction of the World Trade Center in the 9/11 attack, the U.S. economy and global markets were significantly affected. In 2006, reconstruction of the World Trade Center began, and in 2014, it was opened to the public.
