Aadhaar Gets Legal Validation as Proof of Citizenship: Supreme Court’s Landmark Verdict

Report:
In a historic judgment, the Supreme Court has declared Aadhaar card a valid document for proving Indian citizenship. The bench of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Suryakant ruled that in cases related to SIR (Status of Indian Residence), Aadhaar must be considered along with other documents.
The Election Commission of India has been directed to issue notifications to all state election authorities, ensuring Aadhaar’s acceptance as citizenship proof.
The court observed that while fake Aadhaar cards exist, that does not render all Aadhaar cards invalid—just as the existence of counterfeit currency does not make all currency notes illegal.
Citizens in Bihar, whose citizenship had earlier been cancelled, can now resubmit their Aadhaar to reclaim their status.
The ruling has disappointed the BJP and its allies, while the opposition has hailed it as a moral victory of the people. The judiciary’s proactive stance has brought relief to millions across the nation.
