Five Years in Tihar Jail: The Silent Struggle of Scholar-Activist Umar Khalid

Umar Khalid, former student of Jawaharlal Nehru University and a prominent social activist and researcher, has completed five years in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. Arrested for his leadership role in protests against CAA and NRC, no concrete evidence has been proven against him to date.

His prolonged detention without trial, solely for expressing his views and representing a minority community, raises serious concerns about the impartiality of the judiciary and the health of Indian democracy.

Despite peaceful protests, Umar Khalid and many other minority students, including Sharjeel Imam, remain imprisoned under charges of sedition and conspiracy, with repeated bail pleas being denied. This results in valuable years of their lives lost behind bars.

Human rights organizations and activists nationally and internationally have pointed out that this discriminatory treatment is primarily due to their identity as minority Muslims, challenging the constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression, equality, and justice in the world’s largest democracy.

This is not just an individual’s plight but a severe crisis threatening the democratic fabric and rights of the entire Muslim community.
