Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro Sentenced to 27 Years in Prison
Brasília:
Brazil’s Supreme Court has sentenced former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro (70) to 27 years and 3 months in prison over a coup conspiracy. On Thursday, four out of five judges ruled against him.The court stated that Bolsonaro was involved in a plot to overturn power after losing the 2022 election to his rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This makes him the first former president in Brazil’s history to be convicted of an anti-democratic conspiracy.Supreme Court Justice Carmen Lúcia said,
“This is not just a criminal case; it is an event confronting Brazil’s past, present, and future.”She added that Bolsonaro’s actions clearly posed a threat to democracy and state institutions. However, Judge Luiz Fux acquitted Bolsonaro of all charges. His dissenting opinion could open the way for appeals against the verdict in the future.Alongside Bolsonaro, four former military officers were also found guilty. Nearly 140 years after the declaration of the Republic, this is the first time that military officers in Brazil have been punished for an anti-democratic conspiracy.Strain in U.S.–Brazil RelationsThe verdict has sparked new tensions between the United States and Brazil. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the ruling “unjust” and warned that Washington would respond appropriately. In response, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated,
“Threats aimed at intimidating our democracy will never succeed. Brazil remains steadfast in protecting its sovereignty.”New Instability in Latin AmericaThe ruling has generated political tension not only in Brazil but across Latin America. Meanwhile, Argentina’s President Javier Milei has faced a major defeat in local elections in Buenos Aires, and Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has renewed disputes over U.S. military presence.Together, these developments indicate growing uncertainty and instability across the Latin American region.
