Hazrat Maulana Husain Ahmad Madani (RA) and His Contribution to India’s Freedom Movement

Hazrat Maulana Husain Ahmad Madani (RA) was one of the leading scholars, thinkers, political leaders, and freedom fighters of the Indian subcontinent. He was not only a religious personality but also an important voice and activist in India’s independence movement. His contributions and sacrifices can be described from several perspectives.

Early Life and Education:

  • Born on 6 October 1879 in Tanda village near Deoband, Uttar Pradesh.

  • Studied Hadith, Fiqh, and other Islamic sciences at Darul Uloom Deoband.

  • Was a close disciple of Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmudul Hasan (RA) and worked with him in politics and the freedom struggle.

Direct Role in the Freedom Movement:

(a) Silk Letter Movement

  • Actively participated in the secret anti-British plan during World War I, known as the Silk Letter Movement.

  • When the plan was exposed, he was arrested and imprisoned on Malta Island for about three years (1917–1920).

(b) Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind

  • Joined in 1919 and later became its president.

  • Through this organization, he called for Hindu-Muslim unity in the freedom struggle.

(c) Non-Cooperation and Simon Commission Protest

  • Mobilized Muslims to join Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement (1920–22).

  • Took part in the Khilafat Movement, protests against the Simon Commission, and other anti-British activities.

His Political Philosophy:

  • Firmly believed that Hindus and Muslims must fight together against British rule.

  • Opposed the Pakistan Movement, stating that religion is different but nationhood can be based on shared territory.

  • Explained his views in his famous works “Naqsh-e-Hayat” and “Muttahida Qaumiyat aur Islam.”

Imprisonment and Sacrifice:

  • Spent more than 14 years in various prisons of Malta, Lahore, Agra, Delhi, and others.

  • Suffered torture, separation from his family, and physical hardships.

  • Sacrificed personal comfort, fame, and position for the sake of the oppressed and for the nation.

Educational and Social Reforms:

  • Served as a Muhaddith (Hadith scholar) and principal teacher at Darul Uloom Deoband, shaping generations.

  • Spread the message of Islamic unity, morality, social justice, and anti-colonial awareness.

Role After Independence:

  • After 1947, he continued working for communal harmony and peace.

  • Chose to remain in India to uplift the morale of Muslims after partition.

Death:

  • Passed away on 5 December 1957 and was buried in the courtyard of Darul Uloom Deoband.

Family Background:

  • His father’s name was Sayyid Habibullah, a 35th-generation descendant of Hazrat Husain (RA), grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

  • The Madani family remained influential in religious, political, and educational fields.

  • His elder son Hazrat Maulana Asad Madani (RA) was a noted political and social leader and a member of the Rajya Sabha.

  • His second son Hazrat Maulana Arshad Madani became one of India’s prominent leaders.

  • Today, Hazrat Maulana Mahmood Madani, grandson of Maulana Asad Madani (RA), is the President of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind and also served as a Rajya Sabha member.

Yet, leaders of India’s current ruling party, the BJP, such as Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, have demanded that Hazrat Maulana Mahmood Madani be expelled from India and sent to Bangladesh. This reflects sheer ignorance, because BJP leaders neither know nor acknowledge India’s history of freedom fighters. Their predecessors were loyal to the British, while they themselves are the true ideological heirs of Savarkar and Nathuram Godse.

Hazrat Maulana Husain Ahmad Madani (RA) was not just a scholar—he was a selfless patriot, a preacher of Hindu-Muslim unity, and a fearless leader of the anti-colonial struggle. His sacrifice and political vision remain relevant and will continue to inspire as long as truth-loving people live on this earth.
