Historic First: Shabana Mahmood Becomes Britain’s First Muslim Woman Home Secretary

After the resignation of the Deputy Prime Minister, on 5th September the British Prime Minister carried out a major reshuffle in his cabinet. As part of the changes, Shabana Mahmood, who had been serving as Justice Minister and Lord Chancellor, was appointed as the new Home Secretary.

According to international media reports, Shabana Mahmood has become the first Muslim woman in British history to take charge of the Home Office. The minister of Pakistani origin had previously been responsible for immigration, policing, and national security.

In an official statement, the Home Office declared:
“For more than two centuries, Home Secretaries have protected the nation. Today, we begin a new chapter, and we welcome Shabana Mahmood, a member of the minority community, to lead us forward.”

In July 2024, she was elected as a Member of Parliament from Ladywood, Birmingham. Rising through the Labour Party ranks, her journey has now made her a key figure in both the British Cabinet and the government.
