Homes Washed Away, Hopes Drowning: Ganga Erosion Devastates Murshidabad’s Lalbag Subdivision

Staff Reporter, Murshidabad:
Villages in and around Lalgola, Murshidabad, are reeling under the severe impact of Ganga riverbank erosion, which has intensified dramatically during the ongoing monsoon season.

Entire homes, farmlands, and even ancestral properties are being swallowed by the river, leaving hundreds homeless in areas like Mathurapur, Sahajadapur, Kulid, and Kashimnagar.

While some families have found shelter with relatives, others are living in government-run relief camps.
The worst-hit are farmers, as hundreds of acres of cultivable land have already disappeared into the river this year, pushing them to the brink of economic collapse.

Experts blame the lack of long-term river management and modern embankment infrastructure for the recurring destruction.
Locals are demanding permanent flood control measures, not just temporary sandbag solutions.

The administration claims to have increased monitoring and deployed immediate relief efforts, but critics argue that no comprehensive rehabilitation plan or durable embankments have been put in place.

Residents’ collective cry:

“We need permanent protection, not just yearly relief. How long can we lose our homes to the river and start all over again?”

As the erosion continues unabated, thousands of affected people now look to the government, hoping for urgent and lasting action against this escalating humanitarian crisis.
