Islam and Arabic Studies Made Mandatory by Israeli Intelligence
Jerusalem — The intelligence wing of the Israeli army (AMAN) is introducing major changes to its training structure. Under the new policy, every officer and soldier joining the intelligence division will be required to study subjects related to Islam as well as the Arabic language.
According to a report by the army’s radio channel Galei Tzahal, not only translators or radio operators but also analysts and members of the technology branch will come under this program. The aim is that intelligence officers at all levels should not only understand Arabic but also gain deeper insight into Islamic culture, social behavior, and mindsets.
For this purpose, a new training department will be established within the army, where, along with Arabic and Islamic studies, various Middle Eastern dialects will also be taught. Training will begin even before enlistment—during the pre-enlistment preparatory course—and will continue through the basic and advanced officer programs.
According to the intelligence corps’ target, within the next year, 100% of members will receive basic education in Islam, and at least 50% will acquire proficiency in Arabic.
In addition, the “Middle East Studies Promotion Department”, which was shut down six years ago due to budget shortages, will also be reopened. Through this initiative, the army aims to expand Middle East–related studies at the school level as well.
Analysts believe the move comes in response to the intelligence failures of October 7 last year. Military authorities hope that training in Arabic and Islamic studies will enhance officers’ ability to better understand real-world situations.
