Mysterious Death of a Third-Year Student at Jadavpur University

Bongo Darpan, Online: The body of Anamika Mondal, a third-year English department student at Jadavpur University, was recovered from the pond in front of Gate No. 4 on Thursday night. The incident has caused shock across the university campus.Initially, police have registered a case of unnatural death. According to sources, Anamika attended a university program on Thursday night. Later, she was reportedly seen heading toward the pond near Gate No. 4. A narrow lane passes by the union room in that area and ends near two washrooms. Police are investigating whether she accidentally fell into the pond from there.Around 10:20 pm, some students noticed Anamika’s body floating in the pond. She was quickly rescued and taken to KPC Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.There are at least three CCTV cameras around the spot—one in front of the Arts Faculty building, another near the security room, and one facing the Arts Faculty side. Police sources said that the CCTV footage is being reviewed. A forensic team may also visit the campus on Friday to carry out an investigation.Anamika’s home is in Nimta, Belgharia, North 24 Parganas. Police have already contacted her family after receiving news of her death. The university authorities have not yet issued an official statement.It is worth mentioning that in August 2023, the mysterious death of a first-year Bengali department student at the same university caused a huge uproar. Allegations surfaced that the student had fallen from the third floor following ragging in the hostel. After that incident, campus surveillance was reportedly increased, but students claim that ID card checks during entry are still not strictly enforced.This fresh death has once again raised serious questions regarding the security system at Jadavpur University.
