“Punished for Being Bengali”: Shocking Atrocities on Migrant Workers in BJP-Ruled States

Disturbing reports have surfaced of Bengali-speaking migrant workers being subjected to brutal atrocities in BJP-ruled states—only for speaking their mother tongue or for being Bengali. From physical assaults to killings, even pushbacks to Bangladesh have been reported.

A recent case highlights the plight of a migrant worker from Jangipur constituency, who was allegedly tortured in Uttar Pradesh. According to reports, he was locked inside a dark room for days and beaten mercilessly simply for speaking Bengali.

MLA Jakir Hossain strongly condemned these incidents, stating that in states like Odisha, Delhi, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, Bengalis face consistent persecution despite being Indian citizens. “This is not about Hindu or Muslim identity—Bengalis are being targeted only for their language and ethnicity,” he asserted.

He also criticized state BJP leaders for their silence on this issue and urged Supreme Court intervention, while drawing the attention of the Union Home Ministry and the Prime Minister. He warned that if such behavior towards Bengali migrant workers continues, a mass movement will be launched.
