International Desk | 12 September 2025At an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani sharply criticized Israel. He alleged that Israel is not giving importance to the release of hostages in Gaza and violated Qatar’s sovereignty through a recent airstrike in Doha. The Prime Minister said, “Israel is trying to restructure the entire region through force. But we will continue our humanitarian and diplomatic efforts to stop the bloodshed.”Doha Airstrike and Diplomatic ResponseLast week, at a meeting of Hamas leaders in Doha, at least six people were killed in an Israeli airstrike. The meeting was discussing a U.S.-mediated peace agreement and ceasefire proposal. This attack has disrupted ongoing discussions mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, and has further isolated Israel internationally. The UN Security Council has condemned the strike.Sheikh Mohammed said, “Those running Israel today don’t care about the hostages. Otherwise, how can such an attack be justified at this time?”Israel’s ResponseIsrael’s Ambassador to the UN, Dani Danon, stated, “If Qatar continues to support Hamas, Israel will take its own measures.” He emphasized that Israel’s fight is against Hamas, not the people of Gaza or the state of Qatar.International ReactionsRosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, said, “The Doha strike has shocked the world and could mark a more dangerous phase in the Gaza conflict.”Pakistan’s Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed commented, “Israel is pursuing every path to destroy peace. In this situation, it is also questionable whether the release of hostages is beingprioritized.”However, U.S. Executive Ambassador Dorothy Shea stated, “It would not be appropriate to question Israel’s commitment to returning the hostages.”U.S. Visit and Next PlansAfter the UN meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed is scheduled to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington. He will also meet President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance. Trump has already stated that the Doha attack was not in the interest of the United States or Israel and has expressed his displeasure over it.Meanwhile, Qatar has announced that next week it will host an Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, where the attack and the ongoing Gaza conflict will be discussed.
