Strong Reaction at the UN over Qatar Attack
Bong Darpan Online Desk:The United Nations Security Council has condemned the recent airstrike in Qatar’s capital Doha. However, the unanimously adopted statement by all 15 member states did not mention Israel by name.At Thursday’s Security Council meeting, the statement—drafted by Britain and France—said: “The Council fully supports Qatar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. All parties are urged to ease tensions.” It also emphasized the need to end the war in Gaza and prioritize the release of hostages.UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, described Israel’s strike on Doha as “a serious escalation that shocked the world.” She called Qatar an important partner in peace efforts and urged it to exercise maximum restraint.Hamas stated that five of its members, including the son of Khalil al-Hayya, were killed in the attack. Qatar confirmed that one of its security personnel was also among the dead. A state funeral was held in Doha on Thursday, attended by Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a rare criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu over the attack. American officials described it as “a unilateral and unnecessary action” that could undermine the peace process. The Algerian ambassador to the Security Council said Israel was disregarding international law and that such attacks were “an assault on diplomacy and mediation.”In an interview with CNN in Washington, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani announced that an emergency Arab-Islamic summit would be held in Doha next week. Its goal would be to forge a “unified stance against Israeli aggression.”Analysts say that in the aftermath of the strike, both Qatar and Egypt are becoming more active in mediating the Gaza war. Egypt has already warned the U.S. that if such an attack were to happen on its territory, it would result in “serious consequences.”The situation has fueled fresh tensions across the Middle East. Experts believe that the Israeli strike on Doha is not only a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty but also a major blow to long-standing peace efforts.
