“The Sahabi in the East: Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas’ Grave in China – A Forgotten Chapter of Islamic History”

Few people today know that one of the most prominent companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (RA), is believed to be buried in China. According to popular Islamic tradition, Sa’d (RA) played a key role in the early spread of Islam in the Far East and is considered one of the first Muslims to introduce the faith to Chinese lands.

The tomb attributed to Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas is located in Guangzhou, a historic port city in southeastern China. The site, known as the “Huaisheng Mosque Complex”, includes the grave and a memorial shrine, making it a place of reverence for both Muslims and historians. “Huaisheng” literally means “Remembering the Sage”, believed to be a title for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Though modern historians debate the exact details of his journey, Chinese Muslim communities have preserved the legacy of Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas for centuries. Local lore speaks of his peaceful mission, his wisdom, and his integration into Chinese society — long before Islam formally spread through Central Asia.

Today, the site is a symbol of Islam’s deep historical roots in Asia and a reminder of the global vision of the early Muslim ummah.
