A truly historic era in Indian Railways is drawing to a close. Surekha Yadav, Asia’s first female loco pilot, will retire on September 30, marking the end of a glorious 36-year career.

On Thursday, she drove her final train—the Rajdhani Express—from Igatpuri to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai. Upon arrival, she was warmly welcomed by her colleagues with flowers, a tilak ceremony, and a small cultural tribute right on the platform.

  • Education: Diploma in Electrical Engineering

  • Joined Railways: 1989 as Assistant Driver

    • Became a motorwoman in 2000
