UN Adopts Landmark Resolution Calling for Two-State Solution to Israel–Palestine Conflict
Middle East Report – Online Bangadarpon:
In a historic move, the United Nations has adopted a resolution calling for a renewed commitment to a two-state solution to end the Israel–Palestine conflict. The proposal received overwhelming support with 142 countries voting in favor, including India. Only 10 nations opposed, among them Israel and the United States, while 12 abstained.
Championed by Saudi Arabia and France, the resolution—dubbed the “New York Declaration”—urges an immediate end to the war in Gaza and calls for a fair, acceptable framework for peace. It condemns both the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack and Israel’s indiscriminate bombings, blockade, and starvation tactics, labeling them as inhumane actions that have triggered a grave humanitarian crisis.
According to Al Jazeera, fresh Israeli strikes in Gaza killed at least 50 people, including 14 members of a single family near Al-Tawam. Israel has openly declared its intent to capture Gaza’s largest urban center.
The UN and international community strongly condemned Israel’s actions, warning of worsening humanitarian disaster. The UN has already declared a famine situation in Gaza, while Britain, France, and Germany issued a joint statement demanding an immediate ceasefire.
Hamas has welcomed the resolution, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected it outright, insisting that “Palestine will never be an independent state.” Israel dismissed the UN move as a “political circus”, yet the UN remains firm that the resolution is a crucial step toward a two-state solution.
