Venezuelans Prepare for Possible War with the United States

Caracas, September 14, 2025 — Thousands of Venezuelans have responded to President Nicolás Maduro’s call to head to military barracks for weapons training, amid rising tensions with the United States. Maduro urged reservists, armed groups, and young people to learn how to shoot and defend the nation, vowing that U.S. soldiers would be met “with bullets” if they entered Venezuelan soil.

According to AFP, many volunteers from across Caracas arrived at Fort Tiuna, a major military complex, wearing civilian or organizational uniforms — including groups from the National Electricity Company, prison authorities, and state television. Members of pro-government youth groups also pledged to train for self-defense, even “with bare fists if necessary.”

A military officer addressing recruits told them this was “not street protests” but real warfare, emphasizing the need for discipline and commitment. Training included dismantling and assembling Kalashnikov rifles, tactical sessions on U.S. interventions, and simulated exercises without live ammunition.

Maduro has deployed 25,000 troops to border areas and unveiled a national defense strategy. He rejected Washington’s claim that U.S. warships in the Caribbean are for anti-drug operations, calling it a direct threat. The U.S. has accused Maduro of leading a drug trafficking network, which he denies, despite past convictions of relatives on drug charges in New York.

Volunteers, including professionals and students, said they were motivated by patriotism. “If they try to invade, the entire people will defend Venezuela, just as Bolívar once did,” said Jenny Rojas, a lawyer.

Analysts warn that the situation could escalate further as both sides strengthen their positions, reviving fears of armed confrontation in the region.
