Waqf Amendment Act 2025: Jamiat and Jamaat Raise Alarms Over Threat to Mosques and Graveyards

Following the interim verdict on the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind have expressed serious concern over the safety of Waqf properties—particularly mosques and graveyards—across the country.

Currently, India has approximately 400,000 registered Waqf properties, the majority of which are mosques and burial grounds. While the verdict contains some progressive directives, such as:

  • Reservation of the CEO position in Waqf Boards for Muslims

  • Reduction in the number of non-Muslim members in state and central Waqf Boards

  • Reinforcement of the authority of Waqf Tribunals and curbing powers of district magistrates

Despite these positive aspects, Jamiat’s national president Maulana Syed Mahmood Madani and Jamaat’s national leader Syed Sadatullah Husaini have warned that nearly 1.2 lakh mosques and 1.5 lakh graveyards could now be at risk.
