Former United Nations Middle East envoy Nikolay Mladenov has been appointed to the proposed peace board suggested by former US President Donald Trump to oversee the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the appointment. Turkey-based news outlet Hürriyet Daily reported the development.

After meeting Mladenov in Jerusalem, Netanyahu referred to him as the designated Director General of the board. The board has been formed to supervise the second and more complex phase of the Gaza ceasefire.

A senior US official stated that the Trump administration has entrusted Mladenov with managing the board’s day-to-day administrative operations. Donald Trump himself is expected to serve as the head of the board, and additional appointments may be announced next week.

According to Trump’s proposed plan, the board will oversee the formation of a new technocratic Palestinian government, the disarmament of Hamas, the deployment of an international security force, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and reconstruction efforts.

Nikolay Mladenov previously served as Bulgaria’s defense and foreign minister. From 2015 to 2020, he was the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and played an active role in reducing tensions between Israel and Hamas during that period.
